A charge-off is an accounting treatment by a creditor; it does not by itself forgive a debt. A remaining balance or a later collection can appear depending on who owns the obligation.
Check the facts
Review the last lender statements, charge-off notice, sale or transfer information, and collection records. Check whether the original creditor's balance is consistent with a sale or retained ownership.
Next steps
Challenge any duplicate or incorrect current balance with the companies reporting it and the affected bureaus. Get legal advice when a lawsuit or old-debt limitation issue is involved.
