A security freeze restricts access to your credit report for many new-credit decisions and can help prevent fraudulent accounts. It is a protective measure, not a way to erase existing accurate debt.

What to check

Place a freeze with each nationwide bureau separately and keep your access information. When you legitimately apply for credit, ask the lender which report it needs and temporarily lift the relevant freeze. Existing-account activities and some other uses can still occur.

What to do next

If you see unfamiliar accounts, also contact the lender and follow an identity-theft recovery plan. Review existing reports; a freeze does not correct information already in a file.
